Sustainable & Accessible Redesign
Problem statement:
Schuh’s online experience needed a redesign to align with modern sustainability and accessibility standards. The existing interface lacked optimised eco-friendly features, and certain accessibility barriers limited usability for all customers. With an increasing focus on inclusive and responsible design, schuh needed a solution that improved usability, and enhanced accessibility while maintaining a seamless shopping experience.
Designing for Accessibility:
As a UX designer, I prioritise sustainability and accessibility in every project, ensuring that all users have an inclusive and seamless experience. For Schuh's mobile redesign, I adhered to WCAG (Web Content Accessibility Guidelines) standards, utilising colour contrast checkers to ensure readability for users with visual impairments. I paid careful attention to font sizes and used accessible typography, while also optimising the design for screen readers to support users with various disabilities. To cater to users with dyslexia, I implemented design elements that improve legibility, such as clear fonts and simple layouts. I continuously update my knowledge by engaging with resources such as government accessibility websites and Udemy courses, allowing me to stay current with best practices and ensure that my designs are both sustainable and accessible to all.
Designing for Sustainability:
At schuh, I focused on designing for vegan and sustainable purposes by implementing clear filtering options that allow users to easily find products that meet their ethical preferences. I introduced dedicated vegan and sustainable filters, enabling customers to quickly narrow down their choices based on these values. To further enhance the experience, I incorporated distinctive green iconography that visually indicates whether a product is vegan or sustainable, providing an intuitive and eco-friendly shopping experience. This approach not only aligns with schuh’s commitment to sustainability but also empowers customers to make informed, conscious purchasing decisions.
